Nobody Calls You Cute-2021

Illustration based work

Haille Dockery is a multi-disciplinary artist. She is currently exploring the ideas of “cuteness”. Often those who are presented as cute, are put down are never taken seriously. By subverting the traditional “cute” characters, she aims to distort this perception. Her work borders on disturbing, but is then balanced out with the cute subject matter.

In her illustrative practice, she is building a world know as “The Aggravated Garden”. All the beings in this world, openly show their frustrations and unsettling emotions. She also uses animation to convey these thoughts and emotions.

Contemporary Practice

Using the concept and narrative of “the garden”, she explores the relationship between natural and synthetic materials. She uses the things she consumes to create her own habitat. By recontextualizing these synthetic materials, and creating her own personal space, she questions the ways in which we view materials. To her, this waste becomes a therapist making her feel comfortable. She is surrounded by the things she likes to eat and use. Repurposing her own waste, she creates a safe space for herself that others are allowed to look into but can never fully be a part of.

“Imagine there is an average person, just like you and I. They wake up and get ready for the outing of the day. Their special places always being the ones outside. Discovering so many different things and making connections with all of them.

This person is the gardener.

They collect and forage on a daily basis. Anything and everything that would be perfect is taken. It is then placed in a special location where it will spend the rest of its days. The garden grows and changes as each day passes. Becoming even more precious as time goes on. There is nothing sweeter than the time spent in the garden.”
